If you are a beginner in the world of gardening, it is important to know that there are many different types of green plants. Some of them grow well in your garden and some do not. The most common type of plant is the herbaceous plant. These plants have left but no flowers or fruits. They can be divided into two groups: annuals and perennials. Annuals live for only one year while perennials live for more than one year. Perennial plants include grasses, shrubs and trees. The following are the main function of green plants these include:
Food
Plants provide food for animals. This includes both insects and humans. Insects such as bees and wasps eat pollen and nectar. Humans eat fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and other parts of plants. Remember, you can’t live without plants because they provide all of your food!
Shelter
Plants also provide shelter for many different kinds of animals. For example, trees provide homes for birds, bats, squirrels, and even bears. Plants also provide shade for people and animals.
Air purification
Plants use sunlight to make energy. This is called photosynthesis. Plants also produce oxygen by using chlorophyll. Oxygen is what we breathe out. During air purification, plants take carbon dioxide from the air. Then, they combine it with water and light. The result is sugar. When the sugar is used up, the plants need to rest. So, they close their stomata. This process releases oxygen into the atmosphere.
Soil formation
Plants help form soil. Roots grow down into the ground and pull minerals from rocks and dirt. Leaves fall to the ground where they decompose. This creates nutrients for new plants. Also during this process, some of these nutrients become available for animals.
Bottom line
The above list only scratches the surface of how plants benefit us. There are so many things plants do for us. We couldn’t live without them. Remember, When you see a tree, think about all of the benefits it provides.
